"Right now, across hospitals in Wisconsin, we have about 11,000 hospital beds; 2,600 ICU beds; and about 620 ventilators," Dr. Mark Kaufman, chief medical officer for Wisconsin Hospital Association said during a recent Newsmakers interview. Dr. Kaufman discussed surge capacity and how Wisconsin hospitals are preparing for COVID-19. "Generally, Wisconsin hospitals, over time, their average occupancy rate for beds is 58 percent...people are preparing for a large demand on that capacity." Dr. Kaufman also stressed the importance of social distancing since it is the "only tool in our toolbox right now because we don't have a vaccine, and we don't have proven anti-viral medicines for COVID-19."
